What's the lowdown on a vegan diet?

WHAT DO YOU EAT ON A VEGAN DIET?

There are different forms of a vegan diet, but the most basic is simply a diet without meat, fish, eggs or dairy products. A vegan diet is thus a plant-based diet. Vegan food is made up of vegetables and fruit, nuts, seeds and legumes. Most vegans will also eat foods made from vegan ingredients, such as tofu, pasta and bread. Alternatives to dairy products can be found in a range of other milks made from nuts or soya.

Although it sounds limiting to some, it’s often a great surprise to non-vegans when they discover how much vegan produce they eat on a daily basis. All the vitamins, minerals and calories we need can easily be gotten through a vegan diet.

DO YOU LOSE WEIGHT ON A VEGAN DIET?

It depends on what you eat! Sticking to plant-based foods will generally help you lose weight – if you need to. Plant-based foods generally have a lower level of saturated fats and other food groups that make us put on weight. But of course, not all food that is technically vegan is low in fat.

A vegan diet that heavy in deep-fried foods and carbohydrates won’t help you lose weight at all. But a healthy vegan diet is certainly a great step in the right direction when it comes to being at your natural weight.

WHAT DOES A VEGAN DIET DO TO YOUR BODY?

A well-balanced vegan diet has been shown to have several positive impacts on the body. The risk of serious heart disease is usually much lower. Many people find they have greater energy as their body is not using it up trying to process hard-to-digest food. Conditions such as bloating, heartburn and constipation are minimized.

Vegan diets have been found to effectively clear up some skin complaints, such as acne. And of course, what works for the body works for the mind too. Given the influence a vegan diet has on the health off our stomach, this in turn leads to a healthier, more alert mind. Put it this way – with a well-balanced vegan diet, you’re constantly putting things in your body that make it work most efficiently, as opposed to slowing it down.
