WHAT HAPPENS ON A DETOX RETREAT?

Individuals often have different goals when it comes to detox retreats. Overall, the goal of detoxing with foods and juices (or even water or dry fasting) is improving your health. For some this can mean losing weight. For others it can mean eliminating symptoms of toxicity such as skin problems, hormonal imbalances, or other degradations of physical and mental function. For others, fasting and cleansing is a spiritual practice that they do in order to connect to the wholeness or divine within themselves.

Overall, doing a detox retreat gives your digestive system a break while providing nutrients in a more absorbable form. Many detox retreats will also include the use of herbs that support health, enemas or colonics to help clean the digestive system, and the use of ‘flushes’ which are shakes containing high amounts of fiber that sweep through your digestive tract and pull out anything stuck inside.

A detox retreat will often include classes on how to prepare and incorporate healthy food into your life. In addition classes such as yoga, qigong, dance, and meditation are often offered. In many places, specific types of massage that support detoxification such as lymphatic drain massage or Chi Nei Tsang, a Thai stomach massage, are offered. 

The truth is, that cleansing is not always a pleasant process. Yet in the modern day, with all the toxins we are exposed to, it has become more and more of a necessity to incorporate such periods into our yearly schedule. It can be a challenge but when where you will leave having tapped into both a physical and spiritual strength within yourself that you may not have known you had.

HOW DOES A DETOX RETREAT SUPPORT MY HEALTH AND WELLNESS?

The body has four primary processes when it comes to nutrients. These four are: Digestion, Absorption, Utilization, and Elimination. If any of these four processes are impaired, the body’s health with suffer. When toxicity builds up in the body, often it is the process of elimination that first breaks down – in other words, the body’s sewer system gets clogged. Think of it as having your toilet overflow into your house. Gross, right!?

Your body’s sewer system is called the lymphatic system. This system takes waste from all 50 trillion cells in your body and removes it from the body. Waste from the body’s cells is primarily removed via the kidneys, which filter the lymph and then remove the waste as urine.

If this sewer system backs up, it starts to affect the other nutrient processes in the body. The ability to utilize nutrients becomes impaired when toxicity builds up and negatively affects the endocrine glands and major organs of the body. It also affects gut health and the buildup of toxins in your digestive tract creates both absorption and digestion problems.

Taking time to detox your body followed by an improvement in your diet overall can have huge benefits. Many individuals report that they see the complete reversal of symptoms they were suffering from. Many also report a huge increase in energy levels, sleep, and overall happiness.

WHAT IS INTERMITTENT FASTING?

Intermittent fasting is the practice of taking long breaks in eating (usually from late afternoon until late morning). The practice of intermittent fasting has been shown to improve overall health as it gives the digestive system time to clean itself out. The body also has energy freed up from constant digestion to use for regeneration and healing.

People who practice intermittent fasting regularly report having more overall energy and better sleep. They also report that the practice takes a few days to get used to as the body is accustomed to eating at certain times of day. They say that once you push through that initial period of discomfort, the practice because quite easy and even intuitive.

Some researches say that the practice of intermittent fasting actually mimics the way evolving humans lived for millions of years before the modern era. During times when food had to be prepared daily, most people worked in the fields, foraged, or hunted early in the morning. It was only later, towards midday when eating actually took place.

Scientists have also discovered that human metabolism is at its highest during the midday hours and that those hours are the best for eating the bulk of your daily calories. An interesting fact is that in the East, some sects of Buddhist monks have practiced intermittent fasting for thousands of years – only taking some tea and crackers before sundown and not eating again until late morning.
