WHAT DOES STAYCATION MEAN?

Put simply, a staycation is a holiday in which you stay in your home country. This may involve a short or long break to another part of the country, it may even be close by to where you live. You could also choose to stay in your own home but take daily trips out, or have short breaks in other places close by.

A ‘conscious’ staycation has eco-undertones due to the lack of distant traveling involved. There’s also an emphasis on your staycation being one dedicated to wellness activities as opposed to it being one long hedonistic party!

In addition to partaking in the likes of yoga, meditation and spas, a staycation gives you the chance to change your lifestyle for the better. So you might switch your phone off for a week, or leave your laptop in the drawer. It’s these small lifestyle changes that can have just as much effect on our wellbeing as taking exercise or meditating – all contribute to our ability to be in the present moment.

ARE STAYCATIONS WORTH IT?

A staycation is just another wellness option to consider of course. For most of us, saving up for a wellness retreat in a faraway country may take us the best part of a year. Whereas a conscious staycation can ultimately bring about the same results for far less money. A retreat within your homeland usually saves on large airfares, insurance and a new wardrobe! You also don’t lose a day or two traveling and adjusting to a new time zone.

Of course, you don’t have to travel at all. There will likely be a spa within driving distance of your home, and the feeling of being away – even if it’s only five minutes’ distance – can work wonders for the mind. Even the shortest spa days or weekends can be extended within your home by changing your daily routine for a healthier one and exploring what’s on your doorstep.
