FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHICH IS BETTER, NORTH OR SOUTH NEW ZEALAND?

It all depends what you’re looking for as part of your wellness retreat. Given their location, the two islands are very different in terms of appearance and climate.

The North is much hotter, offering beautiful beaches, miles of forest and even volcanoes! Here’s the better island to choose if you’re into watersports and trekking in good weather. You’ll also find more of the North Island to be steeped in local Maori history.

By contrast, the South Island is much cooler, but has some of New Zealand’s finest lakes, mountains and glaciers. It’s also the place to go for those into alpine sports, having its own ski season from July to August. Visit both if you get the chance.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DRIVE AROUND NORTH ISLAND?

New Zealand’s North Island is smaller than the South. Whilst it’s possible to drive around the whole island in a day – a long day – it’s preferable to have at least five days to explore if your wellness retreat is part of a longer road trip.

Hiring a car is the best way to explore North Island, so plan your trip in advance. A loose square of Queenstown, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch can be used as reference points for your adventure, and with mountains, beaches, forests and plenty of Maori history there’s much to see and do on the way!

WHAT IS THE TEMPERATURE ON NORTH ISLAND?

The hottest weather on North Island can be found at the northernmost tip. Here, the island’s geographical position makes for subtropical weather, so it’s even possible to visit the beaches at the height of winter.

You’ll find the hottest months in January and February, and the coldest in July and August. General temperatures range between 20 and 30ºC in summer, and 10 to 15ºC. Remember that the further south you go, the colder it gets.
