FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS GUATEMALA KNOWN FOR?

Guatemala is a haven for adventurers, with rainforests, volcanoes and jungle trails across the country. The fascinating Mayan history has left the landscape dotted with over 1,000 heritage sites. Many of these can be visited as part of a wildlife trek, found in jungle clearings like scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark!

You’ll find great lakes with a backdrop of high mountains, and local wildlife that includes monkeys, ocelots, crocodiles and pumas. The Caribbean coast offers the perfect vista to soothe your mind and body. It’s also thought that Guatemala gave the gift of chocolate to the world. Here it’s still consumed in its original way as a life-affirming drink mixed with chilli.

IS IT SAFE TO VISIT GUATEMALA?

Crime levels in Guatemala are often reported by the western press as being high. However, areas with high crime levels are well away from tourist areas, and so visiting Guatemala on a wellness retreat is perfectly safe. As a rule, stick to crowded areas if you’re traveling alone and keep your belongings close to you at all times. If you’re taking public transport, make sure to use a reputable firm and agree a price before you travel.

WHAT WELLNESS TRADITIONS CAN I FIND IN GUATEMALA?

Interestingly, Mayan traditions have an important role in the country’s healthcare system. Although a western-influenced model of healthcare can be found in all of Guatemala’s main cities and towns, the indigenous influence has remained across the country.

Along with plant-based medicines, the Mayan tradition puts spiritual wellness on a par with physical wellness. This makes for longer consultations with a Mayan doctor if you’re feeling poorly, in order to find the true root of a particular ailment. The link between mental and physical health has often been neglected in the western healthcare system, but in Guatemala it has been practiced for centuries.
