FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHERE SHOULD I VISIT IN INDIA?

India is a huge country with a diverse landscape, widely different cultures and weather systems. You’ll be sure to have a great time wherever you travel, but staying in one region of the country can be a vastly different getaway to another.

Northern India is famous for the Taj Mahal, but has vast desert land and also borders the Himalayas. Eastern India is known for its vast tea plantations, plains and jungle. The west has the capital of Mumbai as well as some fabulous coastline and forests. In Central India you’ll find the Mahabodhi Temple which is said to be the site where Buddha gained enlightenment, sat beneath one of the trees within its grounds. Whilst the south boasts many famous Buddhist and Islamist buildings, it’s also the best place to experience traditional Indian music and dance.

To visit India as a whole is like visiting several different countries! Best to put a pin in your map and just dive in.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL INDIAN YOGA?

The practice of yoga originated in India. Certain aspects of traditional Indian yoga have been taken on board by Western practitioners, and pretty much all of them can be experienced by combining different classes and styles. If you’ve just taken a basic yoga class in the West, it’s likely that you’ve experienced ‘vinyasa’.

This style of yoga allows you to take several positions, one after the other, either standing, sitting or lying down. But Indian yoga focuses as much on the meditative side of things as on the physical. Most of the poses will be familiar to anyone who has practiced vinyasa, but done at a much slower pace. India has a holistic approach to yoga, with mindfulness very much to the fore.

HOW LONG HAS WELLNESS BEEN A CONCEPT IN INDIA?

Wellness concepts have been in India since history has been recorded. The practices of yoga, meditation and massage have long been used in India as part of an individual’s overall health. This extends to diet, medicine, exercise and the role of the family.

Although the concept is growing year-on-year in the West, wellness is a tradition in India that only continues to thrive. Any retreat in India will not only be life-changing through experiencing the incredible scenery and culture, but you’ll be taking a getaway in one of the most spiritual places on Earth.
